In this two-session course Ken Nisbet will look at the records that exist for researching illegitimate children in your family history through church and court records. He will explain why authorities questioned mothers on the identity of the father of their children and what steps were taken to find who the father was. He will also look at why some areas of Scotland had a higher rate of illegitimate births than others as well as how illegitimate children could be legitimised by the subsequent marriage of their parents.

In this two-session workshop the tutor will look at the regulations regarding marriage in Scotland, what regular and irregular marriages were, what the law was regarding divorce and how, where there was a divorce, it can be investigated. He will show how to investigate bigamy cases and why it was an issue during the Great War.

A Death certificate may show a reference to the creation of a Register of Corrected Entry, the tutor will examine why RCE’s are important when it comes to registration and death. The tutor will look at the role of the Procurator Fiscal and Death and why the role extended beyond investigating criminal deaths. He will explain the importance of the Fatal Accident (Scotland) Act of 1895 and subsequent Fatal Accident and Sudden Deaths Inquiry (Scotland) Act of 1906. He will look at how death was investigated prior to these acts.
